Engaging employees in the importance of Health and Safety compliance

With an opportunity to reach a wide audience at conference, Imperial College seized the opportunity to reinforce the role each and every employee has to play in keeping the workplace safe. With such an engaging intervention, the message was clearly delivered – apathy is no excuse and no-one can assume that it’s someone else’s responsibility.

The problem

Although staff working in the university laboratories were very aware of the regulations they felt they ‘had to’ adhere to in a laboratory setting, they lacked the ownership of the responsibility to ‘want to’ keep the work place and all their colleagues safe.

The solution

RoleplayUK designed an entertaining piece of forum theatre to accurately reflect life in an Imperial lab. Using hot seating techniques the delegates could explore the behaviours of the characters and develop an understanding into what made them act in that way; importantly they could witness the outcomes and experience the impact of what happens when you make changes to a behaviour.

The Results

This innovative approach to learning ‘by doing’ was extremely well received by the Manchester conference audience. Building on its success, RoleplayUK have since delivered two further bespoke Health & Safety interactive events for Heads of Department and the Chemical Engineering Department, focussing on critical leadership and team behaviours; both positive endorsements of the versatility of this style of training.

“I found it extremely valuable to understand contrasting behaviours and how I can adjust my own style to build a better rapport with others. It was also great to learn a few ‘exiting’ techniques, to better manage my time.”
